2006 Annual Report

  • Sarah, a 70 year old grandmother, living on a medical disability, adopts three of her grandchildren after her son-in-law and daughter are both convicted of drug violations. For seven years Caritas has provided supplemental food each month (about 75 lbs. of food) to Sarah’s little family. She says, “Its just enough to get us by.”

  • Jose and Maria arrived in Waco shortly before Christmas, 2005. They had come from West Texas where they had been homeless for a couple of months. Jose’s brother, who lives in Waco, had helped them with money to rent an apartment for a couple of months, but they had little else, no food, no furniture, none of the things needed for a household. They had been advised to come to Caritas. Caritas provided, food, clothing for each of them, some household items including thick comforters on which they could sleep. They each found jobs within a few days, and only had to come back to Caritas once more for a little help.

  • June, a 34 year old divorced single mother of two, had lost her teaching job in a nearby community, and although she had, with part-time jobs, been able to pay the mortgage and utility bills, suddenly found her pantry almost completely bare. Caritas provided supplemental food for several months, until June found another teaching job.

Below you will read the statistics for the help which Caritas, in 2006, provided to over 85,000 of your neighbors, giving some of life’s basics. These real people came for help from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and economic situations. Sarah and her family, Jose and Maria, and June and her children, are just three of the real people who stand behind these numbers. Thanks to you, Caritas continues to be the major means in our community whereby those of us who have more than we need, can share with those who just don’t have enough of life’s basics.
