41st Caritas “Feast of Caring”, a “Singing Success”

The 2008 “Feast of Caring,” under the theme of “Singing for Someone’s Supper”, was held on Thursday, March 13, at 6:00 p.m. at Knox Hall in Waco.  As Caritas’ major fundraising event, it again brought together the “Caritas family” of supporters, volunteers, staff and clients to celebrate Caritas ministry and mission in the Waco/McLennan County community.

The 2008 “Feast” was an evening that featured a simple meal of bread and soup to help attendees identify with the struggles of those who have serious basic needs in their lives.  The delicious soup was again provided by Mary and Roland Duty of Poppa Rollo’s Pizza, as they have done for almost two decades, and the bread by Nelson Rue of Schmaltz’s Sandwich Shop.

The theme for this year’s Feast of Caring, “Singing for Someone’s Supper,” was carried out by some very special musical entertainment interspersed throughout the evening’s program.   Choral and musical groups performing included the Waco High School Show Choir, the St. Louis Catholic Chapel Choir and the Gillis Family.  The music included everything from great Gospel and sacred music to Broadway show tunes.

Board Chairperson, Phil Adkins, served as Master of Ceremonies and reports of the efforts of Caritas to assist people and families in need were interspersed between the excellent musical offerings.  Kenneth Moerbe, Caritas’ Executive Director, in his presentation, suggested that Caritas is investing itself more than ever in what he called providing ‘food justice’ for all those whom Caritas serves.  He defined ‘food justice’ to mean that because of the abundance of nutritious food produced in our nation, everyone has a right and is entitled to be able to secure enough nutritious food for themselves and their families.  With this in mind Caritas is focusing on providing its clients with nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables.  Much of this will be possible because of a very generous grant from the Beaumont Foundation of America, as well as an increase in the funds which Caritas receives as a United Way agency, which are designated for the purchase of food.

At the end of the program, Hank Fielder, who had served for three years, 2005-2007, as the Chairperson of the Caritas Board of Directors was honored with an award.  Special thanks are also due to the Caritas staff, especially Buddy Edwards, Patricia Clark, and Sally Norlie, as well as to the FOC Planning Committee, and co-chairs Ellan Burke and Judy Francis and all the volunteers who made this possible.

Several attendees remarked that it was “the best Feast ever.”  If you have not had the opportunity to contribute to this year’s Feast of Caring fundraising effort and desire to do so, please consider sending a contribution to Caritas or donating on this website.
