“Two Step Across the Brazos 2008”—
Near-Perfect Weather Supports A Unique Event
You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day for the third annual Caritas Two Step Across the Brazos—especially when 48 hours earlier torrential rains had hit the area. The early morning was full of hustle-bustle as scores of volunteers from the Young Marines helped with set up of tables, chairs, banners, and other event essentials. By early afternoon beautiful blue skies and cool, crisp temperatures created the backdrop for the “two step enthusiasts” who participated in this unique activity. The Waco Suspension Bridge offered the principal “dance floor” for the two-hour boot-scootin’ event which was followed by a spirited street dance and concert by the Bradshaw Gang.
The dancers arrived early to get warmed up and prepare for the course. Although “Two Step” is neither a marathon nor endurance test, it does present a bit of a challenge in that the dance surface is not always smooth. Nonetheless, all of the dancers displayed a lot of excitement and anticipation for the first notes of music which started the event. The musical sounds coming from DJ Johnnie Bradshaw’s CD player could be heard throughout Indian Springs Park and to the far reaches of the Suspension Bridge. The tunes played included some of the finest two step numbers ever recorded, and there never was a let up in music during the course of the afternoon.
A number of shady rest areas were available, and people took frequent opportunities to enjoy sitting while watching others continue following the dance course. A big hit at the event included kolaches provided by Shipley’s Do-Nuts as well as cold drinks and other goodies that added a little spark to the dancers when their energy seemed to run low. Many of the participants even found enough steam left to continue kicking up their heals for the 90 minute live music street dance when two stepping over the Suspension Bridge concluded.
Even though “Two Step” is designed to be a fun event that everyone enjoys, it is also a fundraiser for Caritas. The corporate sponsors who supported it and the participants who paid $25 a couple to take part in the dance helped assure that Two Step would produce funds to aid the mission and ministry of Caritas.
Those who stayed for the full range of activities were full of praise for the quality of the event and expressed interest in returning next year. Many remarked on that fact that “Two Step” is a very unique occasion for individuals to enjoy dancing in a picturesque outdoor venue while at the same time supporting a worthy cause. So keep your eyes open and your dancing shoes ready for “Two Step Across the Brazos 2009!!!”
