2007 Food For Families Food Drive: Another Great Success!
The annual Food For Families Food Drive (FFF) continues to grow and be more exciting each and every year! The event displays the tremendous chemistry that exists among a number of area organizations that have a strong commitment to helping their neighbor. Schools, businesses, churches, service agencies and individuals all pitched in on Friday, November 16th and spent the entire day collecting, sorting, lifting, moving (or lugging!) tens of thousands of pounds of canned goods which were being donated to the massive effort.
Again, four sponsoring organizations led the way with volunteers who labored long and hard to bring about the high level of coordination required for a successful food drive. A great deal of thanks needs to be expressed to KWTX-TV, HEB,
the Army National Guard and the Boy Scouts who were all instrumental players in the event. Honorary Chairperson Mayor Virginia Dupuy made numerous appearances at the collection site and provided encouragement and gratitude for the volunteers who were putting in the “sweat equity” needed to handle the donations.
The outcome from Food For Families is nothing short of phenomenal. About 316,000 pounds (this total also includes a calculation that computes money donated into pounds) were brought to Caritas by the evening of the event which was a wonderful result! Food from the drive will go to support the work of ten food pantries in the Waco area: Acts Christian Fellowship, Caritas, Church of the Open Door, Fill My Cup (Riesel), Lake Shore Baptist Church, Loaves and Fishes, Mission Waco, Operation C.R.I.S.I.S., St. Francis Social Ministry, and the Salvation Army.
The Annual Chairperson’s Cup Competition helped generate a tremendous effort among area schools, businesses, congregations, civic clubs and other organizations, all of whom strived to bring in the most food. FFF will have a special ceremony to recognize the winners of the competition on Sunday, January 13, 3 p.m. at the Community Room of the Salvation Army, I-35 South.
FFFamilies is one of the largest food drives in Texas, and provides items that will benefit a large number of individuals in need of assistance with food over the coming months in the Central Texas area.
