Caritas depends on donations from the community in order to provide the full range of needed services being provided to people in need. Gifts of money, food and serviceable household items (such as clothing, furniture, electronics, knick-knacks, etc.) are extremely important to Caritas.
Caritas of Waco Begins "Veterans' Case Management" Program
Caritas of Waco has received a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission to begin a case management program specifically for low-income veterans. The purpose of the program is to provide guidance for veterans living at or near the poverty level through a process to help them overcome financial, emotional, educational, employment and other barriers they face. The program's goal is to assist these veterans in moving out of poverty by becoming more self-sufficient and less reliant on emergency assistance programs. Caritas' case management staff will offer a variety of direct and supportive services that veterans need to reach individual goals.
Veterans may contact Caritas directly in person, by phone or through referral from another service provider for information about the program. Individuals will speak with the veteran's case management program coordinator to arrange an assessment of eligibility for participation in the program. Thereafter, the veteran will work with a Caritas case manager to carry out a needs assessment and begin work on a "plan of action" to address areas of need in the veteran's life.
"Caritas is very excited about this program and the benefits it will bring to veterans in our area," said Tammy Stevens, Case Management Director at Caritas. "We have had numerous success stories through our case management program, and now we will direct these services to low-income veterans," she added.
The Caritas Veterans' Case Management Program will serve a veteran of any era and service branch who has had a honorable discharge, who resides in the six-county area (McLennan, Bosque, Falls, Freestone, Hill and Limestone) and who has an annual income no greater than 200% of the federal poverty level.
"This program is supported by a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veteran's Assistance. The Fund for Veteran's Assistance provides grants to organizations serving veterans and their families." See http://www.tvc.state.tx.us/

"SPRING ONTO SUMMER FOOD DRIVE TO HELP PANTRIES FEED KIDS"
In order to help deal with the serious problem of child hunger in McLennan County which worsens in the summer when many children are home from school and cannot receive free, nutritional meals provided in schools, a special spring food drive is being conducted. The seventh annual "Spring Onto Summer Food Drive", which will take place on Saturday, April 8, 2017 is designed to help local food pantries better meet the increased demand for supplemental food that is expected during the summer - a time when there is also a decrease in food and monetary donations to these organizations.
Pantries to receive food donated through this drive are: Shepherd's Heart Food Pantries in Waco, Salvation Army, and Caritas of Waco.
When school is out; families in need have more mouths to feed at home, so the demand for food is greater at local pantries. The community is being asked to help restock the shelves of these local pantries and assist them in caring for people in need.
Individuals are encouraged to make donations of food on April 8th between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at one of the following locations:
Wal-Mart, 1521 N. IH-35, Bellmead
Wal-Mart, 600 S. Hewitt Dr., Hewitt
Wal-Mart, 4320 Franklin, Waco
Wal-Mart, 733 Sun Valley Blvd., Hewitt
Sam's Club, 2301 E. Waco Dr., Bellmead
Brookshire's Food Stores, 100 Peplow St., Robinson
Volunteers will be handing out lists of needed food items and encouraging shoppers to purchase such items while in the store and to place this food in specially-marked containers before leaving. Among needed food items are canned meats, canned vegetables, cereals, baby food, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, dry beans, rice, corn meal and pasta/sauces. Monetary donations will also be accepted
